Attribution and coupons

How long a referral stays credited to you, and how coupon-based promotion works.

What this is

Attribution is the rule that decides how long a click you generated remains eligible to be credited to you if the visitor later converts. Each program publishes its attribution window, for example 7, 14, 30, 60, 90, 180, or 365 days, in its Program overview and Program terms.

Why it matters

If a visitor clicks your link but purchases after the attribution window closes, that sale generally will not be credited to you. Understanding the window helps set realistic expectations, especially for products with long consideration periods.

How to do it

  1. On a program's detail page, check the "Attribution window" shown in the Program overview.
  2. Review the full Program terms for the "Attribution window" and "Coupon use" sections, which the merchant defines specifically for their program, since rules can differ program to program.
  3. If a program allows coupon promotion, only use coupons issued to you by that program, and follow whatever restrictions the terms describe, since coupon misuse can conflict with a program's self-referral or promotional method rules.

What happens next

A conversion within the attribution window is linked back to your original click through the session that began at that click. Conversions outside the window are not attributed to you under normal program rules.

Common mistakes

Do not assume every program has the same attribution window. Always check the specific program's Program overview or terms rather than relying on experience from a different program.

In short

The attribution window is the countdown clock on your referral; check it per program, and follow each program's specific coupon rules exactly as written in its terms.
